PostSubject: Pokemon Battle Terminology Guide   Pokemon Battle Terminology Guide Icon_minitimeSun Jan 17, 2010 9:26 am

Hi guys I just thought it might be useful to copy this stuff down for some people who are on this site so they can understand what various abreviations and sayings mean!

General Terms

OHKO: One-Hit Knock-Out (when it takes a single move to make a Pokémon faint).
2HKO: Two Hit Knock-Out (and the numbers continue).
STAB: Same-Type Attack Bonus (Pokémon that use a move whose type corresponds to their type gain a 50% boost in attack power).
BP: Base Power (of an attacking move), may also refer to Battle Points.
Residual Damage: Damage dealt to a Pokémon that does not originate from an offensive move (ie. Burn, Toxic, Weather, and Entry Hazards).
Entry Hazards: Refers to Stealth Rock, Spikes, and Toxic Spikes, which a have negative effect on Pokémon when they switch in.
Priority: A type of move that does not take into account the speed of your opponent's Pokémon and your Pokémon. A priority move will always strike first, regardless of the user's speed. However, if both Pokemon use a priority move, the one with the higher speed stat will land the first blow.
Hax: Not to be confused with hacking, hax refers to events that have a low probability of happening that are often game-determining factors. It is synonymous with luck.
Synergy: How well the six members of your team cover each others' weaknesses.

Playstyles

Hyper/Heavy Offense: Features the usage of dual screens and many Pokémon that have stat-boosting moves. This style of play relies heavily on offensive synergy to succeed, and depends very much on the timely set-up of the screens.
All-Out Offense: These types of teams go by the philosophy that a good offense is the best defense. These teams employ fast, fragile, and lethal sweepers in an attempt to overwhelm the opponent, and lack walls of any sort.
Bulky Offense: Very synergy based, this play style relies on using Pokemon that are both able to deal out tremendous offensive damage while being able to take a few hits in the process. Instead of using walls, the goal of a Bulky Offensive team is to abuse Pokemon's resistances to minimize as much damage as possible.
Semi-Stall: While this style of play is very similar to bulky offense, it has a great deal of differences. Semi-Stall is a hybrid between Bulky Offense and Full Stall. Semi-Stall teams utilize walls to set up entry hazards to wear down the opponent. This opens the opponent's team up to a sweep from a bulky sweeper who can abuse the hazards. Often times the bulky sweeper will be an integral part of the stalling process.
Balanced: More defensive than bulky offense, these teams attempt to focus equal attention to attacking and defending. They will typically feature an equal number of sweepers and walls.
Full Stall: Fully dependent on entry hazards, other forms of residual damage, and solid physical and special walls with reliable recovery moves, full stall teams generally lack offense and attempt to win by simply wearing the opponent down. Some stall teams will carry a revenge-killer to check threats that are not easily checked.

Tiers

Uber: Pokémon deemed to be too powerful and imbalanced to be used in standard play; they have their own tier.
OU: Overused
UU: Underused
NU: Never Used
NFE: Not Fully Evolved
BL: Borderline
LC: Little Cup

Pokémon In-Battle Roles

Sweeper: A pokémon, either physically or specially based (sometimes there are even mixed sweepers) that carries offensive moves whose main role is to take down the opponent's pokémon. (Ex. Lucario)
Wall: The opposite of a sweeper, walls are pokémon that take hits very well. Walls can be specially or physically orientated (and there are mixed walls as well, but these are generally less effective). (Ex. Blissey)
Tank: A pokémon that is intended to take hits well, but that also has the ability to hit back relatively hard. (Ex. Snorlax)
Spinner: A pokémon with the move Rapid Spin that is intended to remove entry hazards and Leech Seed from the battlefield. (Ex. Starmie)
Spin-Blocker: A ghost-type that comes in to "block" Rapid Spin, in the since that Rapid Spin does not effect ghost-types. (Ex. Rotom-A)
Status-Absorber: A pokémon that carries a move that can help it remove status effects, or that can avoid them altogether. (Ex. Breloom or Honckrow with Insomnia)
Rest-Talker: A pokémon that carries the move Rest and Sleep Talk to increase their longevity. These pokémon typically lack a single-turn recovery move. (Ex. Machamp)
Revenge-Killer: Pokémon that are intended to knock out an opponent's Pokémon right after your opponent has knocked out one of your Pokémon. They usually have high speed and frailty, and can sometimes be Trappers (Pokémon that have abilities or moves that prevent opponents from escaping). (Ex: Choice Scarf Latias or Dugtrio as a Trapper)
pHazer: A pokémon that carries the move Roar or Whirlwind, which helps to negate any stat boosts by your opponent. This mimics the effects of a Hazer. (Ex. Skarmory, Weezing)
Suicide Lead: A pokémon intended to start the game off by setting up entry hazards, and prevents the opponent from doing so, before fainting. (Ex. Aerodactyl)
Anti-Lead: A lead pokémon that is specifically intended to take down other leads, either by knocking them out, or by preventing them from carrying out their function. (Ex. Weavile)
Dedicated Lure: A pokémon that is intended to take out other pokémon that typically wall it with an unorthodox move, setting the stage for a sweep by a teammate that also has trouble dealing with said pokémon. (Ex. Grass Knot Metagross)
Cleric: A pokémon with the move Heal Bell or Aromatherapy, intended to heal status conditions. (Ex. Miltank)
Baton Passer: A pokémon with a stat-boosting move and access to Baton Pass whose role is to pass these boosts to a teammate.

Pokémon/Move Combinations

Crocune: Suicune with Rest, Sleep Talk, Calm Mind, and Roar.
Agiligross: Metagross with Agility and three other attacking moves.
Celetran: Celebi and Heatran combination.
Curselax: Snorlax with Curse.
MixPert: Swampert with Stealth Rock, Ice Beam, Earthquake, and a filler move (often Roar or Protect).
MixMence: Salamence with Draco Meteor, Fire Blast, and Earthquake/Crunch, designed especially for wall-breaking.
SkarmBliss: Skarmory and Blissey, known as the premier walling combination of RSE.
Stallrein: A Walrein with Substitute, Toxic, Protect, and a filler attacking move that is intended to be used in Hail. It can use Leftovers and Ice Body, as well as Protect to regain any HP lost through making the Substitute.
Tyraniboah: A mixed Tyranitar originally designed to break the SkarmBliss combination.
SubCM: Substitute and Calm Mind
SubSeed: Substitute and Leech Seed
Paraflinch: Paraylsis and flinching (accomplished by Thunder Wave and Air Slash), an infamous strategy used by Togekiss.
Parafusion: Thunder Wave and Confuse Ray, used by Lanturn and occasionally, Rotom.
SubPunch/SporePunch: Substitute/Spore and Focus Punch
SubPetaya: Subsitute and a Petaya Berry, can be used with other stat-boosting berries as well.
